  • it has no offside rule

About the Club:

Well known and established for a few years and with over 80 members, we are the community club for the Southend area. We have close ties and share common interests with other local Essex clubs and also have a large and well established Ladies team.

Our philosophy is to have fun and maybe get fit at the same time. So, not only are we an amateur Sports Club, but we're also a closely knit social hub, where you will always find new friends.

Established in 2016, Hawkwell Athletic Walking Football Club has gone from humble beginnings with Southend United and with just 2 or 3 players. It can now boast a membership of over 80 players including a well established ladies or women's team. The female members play football on a Tuesday, just after the men. There is a further men's training session on Saturday mornings and a Sunday afternoon Ladies session planned for the near future. Training sessions consist of warm up and stretching exercises, followed by round robin matches between the members, with teams consisting of anything between 5 and 9 players, with as many as 6 teams at a time. We cover Southend, Hawkwell, Eastwood, Rochford, Rayleigh, Benfleet, Westcliff, Leigh, Thorpe Bay, Canvey, Hadleigh, Shoebury and Wakering, most of South East Essex really. We do have players and members that travel from East London. We often play away from home, in competitions, festivals and friendlies. Always good on a nice sunny day, a kick around and possibly a beer or cream tea afterwards, what more could anybody want. The fitness aspect is important, we often get referals from Southend Hospital and MacMillan. Weight loss is slow and steady and tends to stay off and it is an excellent cardivascular exercise, without to much stress. However the most important thing about walking football and the club is that it's enjoyable and a relatively safe sport for all, regardless of age and skill level. We do of course encourage and train those that have had no football experience at all. Even those that have never kicked a ball, we will also teach dribbling skills and tactical awareness. We would never sideline a player, all players are equal regardless of ability.
